Dear Friends,

Here's some current causes which will greatly benefit from your attention:

1. BP should pay to clean it up

From reports that BP cheated on blowout preventer tests on other rigs, to accusations that they were drilling deeper than permitted, it's clear that BP needs to shoulder the blame, and the cost to clean up this miss. But there is currently a $75 million limit on damages under current law. That's chump change to BP, whose first quarter profits alone were 80 times that, $6 billion. Worse, unless we raise the limit on damages, the rest of us could be stuck with the bill to clean up their mess.

Join me in supporting a measure in Congress to up the limit on penalties to $10 billion. Help us take on BP by signing our petition today.

Day of Prayer for the Waters of the Earth

http://goldenec.com

Upon this day, I stand before all of creation, asking for forgiveness if I have done anything wrong in Creation's eyes, this day or any other day, that I have walked upon the Mother Earth. I also stand before all of Creation, asking for forgiveness for all of my ancestors -- both on my mother's side...

2. As a supporter of Defenders of Wildlife and someone who cares about California wildlife, I am writing to urge you to support AB 2223, legislation that would require the use of non-lead shot in California's wildlife management areas.

The continued use of toxic lead shot in our state wildlife areas continues to affect more than 37 species of birds beyond waterfowl in the state, including golden eagles and wild turkeys. Impacts on mourning doves appear to be especially acute.

California's system of state wildlife areas protects more than 627,000 acres of important wildlife habitat -- and should be managed in accordance to the highest standards of wildlife management. AB 2223, legislation introduced by Assemblyman Pedro Nava, would require the use of non-lead shot in these areas.

Although this legislation is designed to protect wildlife, it also provides public health benefits. Hunters who use lead ammunition are exposed to lead residues and airborne lead particles and may accidentally ingest small fragments of lead in the animals they kill.

Conversion to the use of non-lead ammunition in California's wildlife management areas is practical and affordable. Non-lead ammunition is currently available and is already required for hunting in all national wildlife refuges in California. AB 2223 would establish one common standard to govern small game bird hunting on state wildlife areas while making these important habitat areas safer for all species.

Three years ago, the California Assembly passed a similar requirement for non-lead ammunition in the habitat of rare and highly endangered California condors. It's time to take the next vital step to protect more wildlife in the state's most important habitat.

I have also copied Assembly Appropriations Committee Chair Felipe Fuentes and Vice Chair Connie Conway on this message.

Thank you for considering my views on this important matter.

6. Tell the House to Provide Help Now to Struggling Families

Things are different these days. Everywhere you go someone talks about it ― her mother still can’t find a job, or her husband, or her best friend.

In fact, over 15 million Americans are still unemployed, and nearly half have been out of work for six months or more. States are in crisis and preparing to lay off thousands of teachers and other workers. Whole communities watch as drastic cuts to education, health care, child care, domestic violence shelters, and other vital services are made in their backyard.

While families across the country struggle to find their footing, federal support for vital programs, including extended unemployment insurance benefits, COBRA subsidies for workers who lost health insurance coverage, summer jobs for youth and additional funding for Medicaid and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, is scheduled to end.

Your Representative has a critical opportunity to protect these lifelines but we need your help. The House could vote this week ― and the vote is expected to be close.

Tell your Representative that your family, your community and our economy deserve the chance to thrive.
